Last Saturday found me adventuring the back roads of Irene, a farming suburb on the outskirts of Pretoria.  Sun Herbs farm was my destination, where a farm feast was being prepared… inside a custom-fitted vintage bull-nose Mercedes Benz truck.

Delaire kitchen

It’s likely you’ll have heard names such as The Fat Duck, Noma and El Bulli before and you may even know their chefs, but do you know the guy who helped Heston Blumenthal develop his scientific approach to cooking?

Peter Barham was recently brought out to South Africa by Wehrner Gutstadt and his daughter Daniela over at Culinary Equipment Company, (oh, they’re just the whose who in exquisite professional kitchen equipment) to lecture on this fascinating topic.  My colleagues and I attended the first one at Delaire Graff Estate in Stellenbosch on the Helshoogte Pass, along with some of Cape Town’s finest chefs and foodies.

Yum: Margot & Ann aren't shy

At last, the wait is over.  The time has come for Pig Weekend, where the Italian Delle Donne family get together on their farm Zandam near Paarl.  Two days of family bonding and sharing in the preparation and enjoyment of some of their farms finest product.  This was their twenty second year together and even with concerns that the annual gathering would be rained out, everyone was in good spirits.  It turned into the most beautiful day which set the scene perfectly for some seriously tasty shenanigans.

lemon & poppy seed cupcake with lemon & basil blossom icing

It’s amazing how life works, isn’t it?  When I was a wee lass, about 8 or so, I developed a mild form of epilepsy called Petit Mal.  Due to being on lots of different medication – I was a bit of a crash test dummy for the doctors in Zimbabwe and at Johannesburg General, as epilepsy wasn’t a common diagnosis in the 80′s – I generally cannot recall too many of my childhood memories.  Those that do stand out are of afternoons spent in the kitchen with my granny Babs after school, baking and icing cupcakes.  I loved hanging out with my gran, and it’s where my love of food and cooking stems from.
